“Walt, I’m sorry I laughed when you told me your name. I’d promised that I wouldn’t and then I went ahead and did,” Kay said.

“What’re you saying? Oh, that,” Walt said, laughing. “I’m used to it.”

“But you ran out without even saying you were leaving and you haven’t called since,” she said.

“I had an emergency call from another deputy, a very tense scene. I’m always on backup, even if asleep, you know. Leaving had nothing to do with you,” he said. “Do you know what has happened since?”

“I know that Luke is banged up again, a broken arm, broken ribs, stitches in his head again. But he’s coming to school, and he talks to Dale and Amy,” she said. “How much more is there?”

“There’s some that was left out and it’s public record, so I can talk about it,” said Walt. He filled the blanks in her knowledge.

“The sisters didn’t seem surprised or dismayed about their brother. I’m not sure they care that much. They are just worried about what they’re going to do; he made all the decisions before. I don’t know how we’re going to help those unworldly women. Someone’s going to have to take charge,” Walt said. “What’re you going to do when Luke, Dale, and Amy leave in a few weeks?”

“Go back to college. There are a couple of classes I need to take. Why?” Kay raised an eyebrow.

Walt turned the corners of his mouth down. “It’s just, you’ll be gone all summer. I’ll miss you.”
